9/11 Memorial Blood Donor Drive Surpasses Goal

B.P. Molinaro Thanks 325 Staten Islanders for Giving “The Gift of Life”

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today thanked the 325 Staten Islanders who gave “the gift of life” during 9/11 Memorial Blood Donor Week, surpassing the blood drive’s goal of 274 pints – one for each Staten Island victim of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks.

“Staten Islanders have always come together and given generously of themselves, particularly in time of need,” said Molinaro. “On the fourth anniversary of 9/11, they chose to pay tribute to our lost loved ones by giving the gift of life.”

In response to the emergency blood shortage, and to pay tribute to Staten Islanders lost in the terrorist attacks, Molinaro held a five-day blood drive across the Island, which kicked off at Borough Hall on September 7th, and concluded on September 11th, when Brooklyn/Staten Island Blood Services collected a total of 325 pints.

“Charity begins at home, and I’m pleased that Borough Hall employees rolled up their sleeves to give blood, as well as District Attorney Dan Donovan, firefighters, police and other civil servants who participated in memory of their colleagues who perished on 9/11, and helped us well exceed our goal,” Molinaro said.

“In addition to the many blood drives Borough Hall proudly holds each year, the 9/11 Memorial Blood Donor Week has become an annual tradition every September to honor the memory of our lost loved ones,” Molinaro added.

Brooklyn/Staten Island Blood Services operates a donation site at 2791 Richmond Avenue, New Springville, that is open Monday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. To make an appointment to donate blood, call (718) 226-1558.
