STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Borough President James P. Molinaro today declared that 2006 will be the year to green-light several significant traffic improvements for Staten Island, to bring relieve to the most congested and dangerous intersections. “We have a great opportunity to go forward with a number of initiatives that will bring relief to Staten Island motorists
Among the road improvement goals Borough President Molinaro has set forth for 2006 are:
o Finalizing the plans for landfill roads with two lanes in each direction as a traffic relief conduit between Richmond Avenue and the West Shore Expressway, putting the project on the fast track to completion in 2007.
o Completion of the study of possible restrictions on Hylan Boulevard left turns, except in cases where a stacking lane is present.
o Implementing the improvements at Hylan Boulevard and New Dorp Lane, including the addition of new turning lanes.
o Beginning the widening of the intersection of Seguine Avenue and Amboy Road, so that left turns can be made without blocking traffic.
o Instituting the safety improvements on Todt Hill Road, including the realignment of a dangerous sharp curve, and the installation of a left turn lane at Helena Road.
o Designing and implementing traffic flow improvements at busy intersections such as Richmond Avenue and Amboy Road, Clove Road and Victory Boulevard, and Richmond Avenue and Victory Boulevard.
o Implementation of Borough President Molinaro’s traffic improvement recommendations on the South Shore, including a no-waiver zone, street widenings, a new highway ramp, and the creation of Englewood Avenue, which is already mapped.
o Progressing with the construction of the new entrance to Miller Field.
Mass transit goals for 2006 include:
o Obtaining the necessary $2 million in funding for the second study of the feasibility of a North Shore passenger rail line.
o Continuing the studies of the West Shore rail line that would connect Staten Island with New Jersey.
o Identifying a location for a fast ferry from the South Shore to Manhattan.
o Locating and creating new Park-and-Rides, which are a great success story on Staten Island due to their ability to remove cars from the road.
