Borough President Molinaro announces plans for Borough Hall Centennial Celebration
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today announced that he has begun planning for a 100th Birthday Celebration for Borough Hall, to be held on Sunday, May 21st, from 2:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m. at Borough Hall in St. George. The date of the celebration coincides with the actual date that the building was first occupied in 1906.
Molinaro and his staff have already met with Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Martha Hirst and her staff, as well as various cultural organizations to discuss the celebration.
Borough President Molinaro will also be inviting former Borough Presidents Ralph J. Lamberti and Guy V. Molinari, as well as their families and the families of former Borough Presidents to participate in the celebration.
“On May 21st, the 100th Anniversary of Borough Hall, I will be opening the building to the public so that Staten Islanders can see a piece of their heritage,” Molinaro said. “Tours of the recently renovated first and ground floors will be available, and will showcase the building’s early 20th Century Roman Revival style architecture, which emphasized the use of marble, as well as the 13 WPA-era murals depicting important occurrences in Staten Island history,” Molinaro said. “The murals have been conserved to their original beauty, and provide an important source of information and cultural history for all Staten Islanders,” Molinaro said.
“I am pleased that we have an opportunity to involve Staten Islanders in remembering and preserving their history,” Molinaro said. “We will be inviting Staten Island schoolchildren, cultural organizations, and both former and current elected officials to participate in the celebration, and it promises to be a most exciting event that will be remembered for years to come,” Molinaro concluded.
Activities, refreshments, and live music will be provided at the celebration. More details will be available as the date nears. For more information, please contact Joanne Nuzzo, Director of Special Events for the Borough President’s Office, at 718-816-2133.
