B.P. Molinaro and DOT announce the beginning of left-turn prohibitions on Hylan Boulevard

First phase of project to begin Thursday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro, along with the New York City Department of Transportation, announced today that the first phase in the project that will prohibit left-turns at certain intersections along Hylan Boulevard will begin this Thursday, August 17, 2006.

“I would like to applaud Commissioner Weinshall for pushing these improvements forward,” Molinaro said.  “Staten Islanders have been complaining about the traffic congestion caused by motorists attempting to make left-hand turns for years, and now we will finally be able to attempt to remedy the problem,” Molinaro said.

When completed, the project will span Hylan Boulevard between Steuben Street and Richmond Avenue.  The first phase of the project, beginning Thursday, will encompass Steuben Street to Raritan Avenue.  Signs will be posted along Hylan Boulevard indicating the intersections at which left turns are prohibited, and eventually the intersection will be blocked off with a guardrail or by an increase in the asphalt level.

“The Mayor's Traffic Task Force is tackling congestion at priority intersections across Staten Island, and prohibiting left turns at intersections along Hylan Boulevard will help alleviate congestion on one of Staten Island’s busiest corridors,” said Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall.

During the first phases of the project, DOT will implement changes in the timing of traffic signals at the affected intersections, as well as post signage alerting motorists to the changes.

“I ask Staten Islanders to be patient as this transition occurs,” Molinaro said.  “We are optimistic about the changes, and hope that traffic will begin to flow more smoothly on our Island’s most congested roadway,” Molinaro concluded.
