Borough President Molinaro presents Dept. of Sanitation with new salt spreader
Allocates $236,000 for state-of-the art truck for Staten Island’s fleet
STATEN ISLAND, NY –Borough President James P. Molinaro today presented to the Department of Sanitation a new state-of-the-art, salt spreader truck at a press conference in front of Borough Hall.
Molinaro allocated $236,000 in capital funding for the vehicle, which will increase Staten Island’s official fleet of salt spreader trucks to 47. This is the third salt spreader that Borough President Molinaro has provided the Department of Sanitation in the past three years. Each new salt spreader was assigned to one of Staten Island’s three Sanitation districts.
“I am pleased to assist the Sanitation Department by providing this brand new salt spreader. Our Borough has more than 1,500 miles of road – many of them hilly -- including 744 miles of side streets. I felt if we could give additional help to Sanitation, it would make our roads more passable and safer. I am pleased that this capital funding will help ‘New York’s Strongest’ fulfill their duties,” Molinaro said.
Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty said, “We are grateful to the Borough President for providing us withanotherstate-of-the-art piece ofsnow-fighting equipment so that we can better serve the residents of Staten Island. Salt spreaders are our first line of defense in snowstorms and thistruckwill offer us awonderfulopportunity to cover more roads and streets so that traffic can flow. AndI'm sure thatin the very near futurewe will be putting this spreader to workso that our neighbors can safely get their children to school and get themselves to work.”
At the press conference, Molinaro turned over the keys to Commissioner Doherty, Borough Chief Dan Ambrose, and Assistant Commissioner Rocco DiRico. The new high-tech vehicle is equipped with state-of-the-art emissions controls which will help the Department of Sanitation to clean the air as it salts streets. This truck is the first truck in the City’s 365-spreader fleet to be equipped with an “active regenerative diesel particulate filter,” which substantially lowers vehicle exhaust emissions.
