B.P. Molinaro and Parks Commissioner Benepe announce funding for soccer field on South Shore
Molinaro Allocates $1.2 Million for Synthetic Turf Field in Bloomingdale Park
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Surrounded by soccer moms and kids, Borough President James P. Molinaro and New York City Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe today held a press conference at Borough Hall to announce funding for a new synthetic turf soccer field in Bloomingdale Park.
Molinaro has allocated $1.2 million from his Fiscal Year ‘07 capital budget to install a synthetic turf field in place of the grass field that currently exists.
“The installation of a new, improved field continues our commitment to active recreation in Bloomingdale Park,” said Molinaro. “The field is so popular, used by so many children and adults alike, that the grass is worn in many areas.
“The new field offers a permanent solution to the erosion in the existing grass field, so our soccer enthusiasts will have a useable green field at all times,” Molinaro added.
Commissioner Benepe said, “Bloomingdale Park is a key recreation hub for residents of Staten Island. Over the past several years we’ve made tremendous progress in developing both passive and active recreation areas that benefit community members young and old. Borough President Molinaro’s allocation of funding for a new synthetic turf field continues that transformation."
The Parks Department expects that the synthetic turf field will be ready by next summer.
“I am grateful that the recreational facilities at Bloomingdale Park have been a hit with the public,” said Molinaro. “Clearly there was a need for this park, and I am proud to have helped create the “Central Park of the South Shore.”
