B. P. Molinaro calls for “new blood,” launches Community Board recruitment effort
B.P.’s Office Posts New Application on Website: www.StatenIslandUSA.com
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Borough President James P. Molinaro today urged civic-minded Staten Islanders to apply for positions on their local Community Boards, and posted a new application on his office’s website.
“It’s time to refresh the boards, they need new blood,” said Molinaro. “Therefore, my office is launching a recruitment effort for new members. To make it easy to apply, I have posted a new application on my office’s website, www.StatenIslandUSA.com.
“Community Boards play an important civic role in empowering citizens to participate in government decisions that affect their neighborhoods,” Molinaro added. “If you care about your community and you want to make a difference, I encourage you to apply and help shape the future of our borough.”
The City Charter empowers the Island’s three Community Boards with an advisory role in zoning and other land use issues, in the City budget process, and in the delegation of municipal services. Any person living or working within a specific district is eligible for appointment to the boards.
Each year, the term of office expires for half of each board’s 50 unsalaried members.
All Community Board appointments are made by the Borough President – half of them unilaterally, and half upon recommendation by the Island’s City Council delegation.
Community Board 1 serves the Island’s North Shore, while Community Boards 2 and 3 represent the Mid-Island and South Shore areas, respectively.
