B. P. Molinaro hails Community Board recruitment effort as “a great success”
150 applications filed one month before May 15th deadline
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Borough President James P. Molinaro today said his efforts to recruit new members for Staten Island’s community boards have far exceeded his expectations, with 150 applications filed one month before the May 15th deadline.
“When I launched the new application process in February, I said we needed to refresh the boards with new blood,” said Molinaro. “I’m pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have applied, a large percentage of whom hold professional occupations.
“The recruitment drive has been a great success so far,” Molinaro added, “and my office is currently in the process of analyzing the applications as we go forward.”
Prospective applicants have until May 15th to file. Applications are available on the Borough President’s website, www.StatenIslandUSA.com.
The City Charter empowers the Island’s three Community Boards with an advisory role in zoning and other land use issues, in the City budget process, and in the delegation of municipal services. Any person living or working within a specific district is eligible for appointment to the boards.
Each year, the term of office expires for half of each board’s 50 unsalaried members.
All Community Board appointments are made by the Borough President – half of them unilaterally, and half upon recommendation by the Island’s City Council delegation.
“Community Boards play an important civic role in empowering citizens to participate in government decisions that affect their neighborhoods,” said Molinaro. “If you care about your community and you want to make a difference, I encourage you to apply and help shape the future of our Borough.”
Community Board 1 serves the Island’s North Shore, while Community Boards 2 and 3 represent the Mid-Island and South Shore areas, respectively. For more information, call the Borough President’s Helpline at (718) 816-2000.
