Molinaro cuts ribbon for new Petrides library

Provided $1.2 million to renovate the Island’s largest public school library

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro and Michael J. Petrides Educational Complex Principal Joanne Buckheit today cut the ribbon for the state-of-the art, K-through-12 Sunnyside school’s newly-renovated library.

Molinaro allocated $1.2 million in capital funding for major renovations to the  library, including new books, bookshelves, desks, tables and chairs, lighting and flooring, a fire alarm system, computers and wireless laptops, a “children’s corner” with “pint-sized” seating and tables, and a separate study area for high school students.

“I am delighted that this school library -- Staten Island’s largest -- can now provide a more comfortable and attractive learning environment for students of all ages,” said Molinaro. “I am pleased that my capital funding can help give our children the resources they need to ensure a quality education.”

Principal Buckheit said, “We are very excited about the opening of our new school library. The well-thought-out space will allow our early childhood students to enjoy read-alouds in comfort and permit our high school students to conduct sophisticated research. We thank Borough President Molinaro for his continued support of our school.”
