Borough President Molinaro hails Sanitation Department on fast, efficient snow removal

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today praised Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his administration for the superb snow removal job performed by the Department of Sanitation in the wake of this weekend’s snow storm.

“Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty and Borough Chief Ralph Reed did a great job of clearing our streets, helping provide for a smooth commute this morning,” Molinaro said.

During the height of the storm, which dropped 10” of snow on the Island, 261 pieces of equipment, including plows, salt spreaders, and plow-equipped collection trucks were deployed in the Borough.

“My Help Line has reported that there were no serious complaints reported regarding the storm,” Molinaro said. “The expressways and main roads are in good shape and the Department of Sanitation is now concentrating on secondary and tertiary roads.”

“Of course, no storm will be without difficulty for residents, but on the whole, the commute was smooth thanks to the effectiveness, dedication, and competence of ‘New York’s Strongest,’” Molinaro said.

Staten Islanders that need to report a snow-related problem should call the Borough President’s Help Line at 718-816-2000.

Each year the Help Line gets calls asking for clarification on basic laws pertaining to snow.  Here is a quick refresher.

-How many hours before you must clear snow from your sidewalk? Snow and ice must be cleared from the sidewalk within 4 hours after the snow has stopped falling, or by 11:00 a.m. if the snow has stopped falling after 9:00 p.m. the previous evening. Snow should not be thrown in the street.

-Is it illegal to drive my car without clearing the snow off? Yes. Your car must be entirely cleared off. Cleaning the windows is not enough.  If you drive with snow on your roof, it can fly off, causing an accident for the cars driving behind you.
