The Staten Island Heart Institute

For years, Staten Islanders with heart ailments traveled to New Jersey, Manhattan or other boroughs for care. Throughout the 1990's efforts to establish a heart surgery facility on Staten Island were unsuccessful.

That changed, when Borough President Guy Molinari and then-Deputy BP James Molinaro successfully negotiated with the New York State Health Department to bring a world-class Heart Institute to Staten Island.

Opened in 2001, it is jointly operated by Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH). The Institute is housed in two floors of a newly constructed surgical tower on SIUH's North Campus.

Procedures include coronary bypass operations, heart valve replacements, angioplasty, and cardiac catheterizations.

With the creation of the Heart Institute, Staten Island patients and their families no longer have to travel many hours out of borough for cardiac care, hospital visits and follow-up exams. "I am proud that I played a part in creating this greatly needed facility for our Borough residents," said Borough President Molinaro.
